Cheers

I chug down chardonnay from the bottle
We opened last night
celebrating your book release
And wait for the sun to rise on the horizon
Across the river.
I remember how much you hate
The first ray
And always want the blinds drawn.
Darkness is now my alley
Because nothing that didn’t
Win your heart
Could win mine.
Sitting in the chair
Where you once nuzzled
Your head into my lap
Crying your eyes out because
Your stories didn’t make it to
the magazine you idolized.
Oh how far have we come?
I place a hardback copy of your novel
On the shelf
Right beside the keyring you gave me
At twelve
I never dared to carry it out
Lest it should get marred
By the passage of time;
Time – that has marred us the same way,
Congratulations, i say to you.
It’s a victory i celebrate
With or without me beside you
Because whatever won your heart
Always, definitely, won mine.
